On Monday, October 2, 2023, County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) 911 Communications Center received an emergency call of a women giving birth at a local gas station in Palmdale.
The 911 Communications Center dispatched Fire Station 24. Once on scene, the team found the husband helping his wife delivery their baby in their car, but the umbilical cord was wrapped around the infant’s neck.
Firefighter Paramedics Derrick Alvizo and Gerald Whymore quickly sprang into action to cut and remove the cord with assistance of Fire Captain Tom Harper.
The mother and baby were stabilized then transported to a nearby hospital for additional care.
