Firefighters and lifeguards on the Palos Verdes Peninsula helped educate residents on the importance of emergency preparedness at the Palos Verdes Peninsula Preparedness Expo at the Harlyne J. Norris Pavilion in Rolling Hills Estates on Sunday, Nov. 1.
Lifeguard Nick Macko showed off one of the new lifeguard vehicles and hosted a booth filled with photos and displays of lifeguard safety equipment. He also gave a presentation to the public about water safety.
Post 14 Fire Explorers taught Hands-Only CPR to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Police Explorers from the Lomita Station. The Police Explorers then stayed to help the Fire Explorers teach the technique to more people.
Community Services Liaison Laura Walters and Fire Fighter Paramedic Jenny Sandoval hosted a booth with general fire safety information. Walters also gave a presentation about the Fire Department’s Ready! Set! Go! program.
Of course, the Shakey Quakey earthquake simulator was a big hit, as were tours of Fire Station 106, which is located next to the Norris Pavilion.
The event also featured presentations about safety plans for the school and library districts; vendors selling safety preparedness supplies; and booths from other local organizations.
The expo was supported by the cities of Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills and Rolling Hills Estates; Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe; the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District; LASD; the Fire Department; and the Department of Homeland Security.
