At its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 24, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors held a hearing and approved an ordinance to amend County Code, Title 12 – Environmental Protection; made two proclamations; and issued one declaration.

The Board gave its initial approval to an ordinance amending County Code, Title 12 – Environmental Protection. The ordinance involves changes in the fee amounts for all programs that are within the Health Hazardous Materials Division. A new service fee of $100 will be charged to a facility owner who requests for the Los Angeles County Certified Unified Program to enter required hazardous materials information into the California Environmental Reporting System database. In addition, a new lower fee category will be created in the Hazardous Waste Generator fees. The new fees and increases will fund increases in salary, benefits and overhead expenses that occurred within the past six years in the HHMD.

The Board proclaimed the month of May to be “Foster Care Awareness Month” to encourage families and others in the community to open their homes to children and teenagers in need of a stable home. One of the critical missions of the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) is to find permanent, loving homes for children who need adoptive families. DCFS welcomes individuals and families regardless of age, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital or domestic partnership status.

In addition, the Board proclaimed June 4 as “National Trails Day” which occurs annually on the first Saturday in June. The day commemorates the nation’s trail system and the thousands of people who work to enhance it. There are more than 200 miles of multi-use trails operated by the Department of Parks and Recreation throughout Los Angeles County.  On June 4, there will be a Multi-Use Trails Day Celebration from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pathfinder Park in Rowland Heights. The event will include trail excursions, educational workshops, food and entertainment.

Finally, the Board declared the month of July to be “Junior Golfers Appreciation Month.” Throughout the month, golfers under the age of 18 can play at all County golf courses for $1 with every full paying adult or senior after noon daily. Each golf course will accepts donations of new and used golf clubs and balls for the Junior Golf Program which gives free lessons to young golfers. Also, the golf courses will hold free Special Skills Days with activities such as free lessons, clinics, skills challenge contests and other events to improve and promote junior golf participation.
