At its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 14, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors recognized an employee of the Fire Department, as well as proclaimed June 2016 as “Refugee Awareness Month” and “Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month” and November 2016 as “Chinese- American Film Festival Month.”
The Board presented a scroll to Mike Conrad, an equipment maintenance worker in the Eastern Fire Shop, who is retiring from the Fire Department after 41 years of service.
Just as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees annually proclaims June 20 as “World Refugee Day,” the Board proclaimed June 2016 to be Refugee Awareness Month to increase awareness of the contributions of refugees throughout the county. In the past five years, more than 6,000 refugees arrived in Los Angeles County, according to the California Department of Social Services.
More than 5 million older American are victims of elder abuse or neglect. According to the National Research Council, 93 percent of elder abuse goes unreported. Financial exploitation is a fast-growing form of abuse of seniors and adults with disabilities. By proclaiming June as Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month, the Board encourages departments across the County to continue serving elderly residents and dependent adults with disabilities and educating the general public on the prevention, reporting and eradication of elder and dependent adult abuse.
In November, the San Gabriel Valley will host its 11th Annual Chinese-American Film Festival, developed by EDI Media. The festival is scheduled to screen more than 200 international films submitted throughout the entertainment industry. The Board proclaimed November as Chinese American Film Festival Month to promote co-productions between Chinese and American film professionals to enhance the friendship between the U.S. and China.
