Outgoing Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby and other local officials gathered at Fire Station 143 on Wednesday, Nov. 30, to officially dedicate the station.
“When you think about the Los Angeles County Fire Department, we have an amazing reputation,” Chief Osby said. “In particular, we have an objective and mission that we hire the best people, that we train the best people, that we equip them with the best equipment, and we house them in the finest facilities.
“I think that today’s opening of this new fire station is an example of this commitment.”
Located in the Hasley Canyon area of Castaic, the station, which opened Oct. 1, currently houses Engine 143 and its crew. Up to seven people can live at the energy-efficient station.
“This canyon really does need this station,” Santa Clarita Councilwoman Laurene Weste told the assembled crowd. “You being here is going to make the people of Castaic and this particular area, which is very fire prone, feel a lot safer.”
Novus Construction, working with William Loyd Jones Architect, built the 9,700-foot structure.
“What’s remarkable about this station (was its) $10.5 million budget,” Antonovich said. “We saved $1 million, so it’s actually a $9.5 million budget. I appreciate the efficiency because those dollars will be used for other programs and helping (fulfill) other needs of the Fire Department.”
As part of the Los Angeles County Arts Commission Civic Art Program, the station’s atrium lobby features hanging sculptures by artist Kipp Kobayashi.
“Responding to the department’s mission of providing improved fire protection, emergency medical and life safety services to the expanding Santa Clarita Valley and adjacent communities, the artist designed a collection of 3D printed resin sculptures based on equipment, tools, mementos and artifacts found in fire stations throughout the region,” according to the Arts Commission. “The 3D printed objects are grouped into 18 vertical strands suspended on an aluminum frame from the ceiling of the two-story high space.”
Fire Station 143 is located at 28580 Hasley Canyon Road in Castaic.
