The Los Angeles County Fire Department joined the La Habra Heights Fire Department in dedicating a memorial plaque in honor of the six firefighters who lost their lives during the Hacienda Fire in September 1955.
The ceremony took place on Saturday, January 7, at the La Habra Heights Civic Center.
On the afternoon of September 2, 1955, a brush fire claimed the lives of LACoFD Captain Glenn Rockey and five members of Crew 5-1, including Franklyn Fay (16 years old), La Verne Pendergast (17), Terry Kelly (17), Gregory Sambrano (17) and William Strack (16).
The devastating event propelled changes in the way brush fires are currently fought.
