After enduring weeks of intense training, 50 dedicated candidates graduated from the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s (LACoFD) Women’s Fire Prep Academy. The participants received certificates as well as an invaluable opportunity to experience what it is like to train and be part of the academy.
In early April, the candidates were initially selected from a field of more than 120 individuals. A fitness exam led to the selection of the top 50 who would eventually continue on with the training.
“The objective of the intensive training is to prepare them for the physical aspect of the academy,” said LACoFD Captain Jasmine Segura. “They will walk away with the experience of understanding what is expected of them.”
Every Saturday, participants began their mornings with a workout as well as a demonstration on different types of equipment and skills. They learned everything from working with extension ladders and rotary saws to pulling and laying down hose.
The five-week academy encouraged many of the candidates to seriously train and pursue a career in fire service. Organizers of the WFPA received cards and thank you letters for hosting the academy.
