Ocean Lifeguard Training Academy Class of 2017 Graduates

Forty candidates graduated from the 2017 Ocean Lifeguard Training Academy on Saturday, June 17 at Dockweiler Youth Center in Playa Del Rey. Ten of the 40 new lifeguards are women.

“The graduation allows the new Ocean Lifeguards to share their pride and accomplishments with their families as well as show the importance the Department places on their work and their training,” said Rescue Boat Captain Brian Lanich. “I have confidence in everyone who completed the Academy and I’m excited for them to start their careers with the Lifeguard Division.”

The Lifeguard Training and Community Services Section conducted a rigorous 100-hour Ocean Lifeguard Training Academy held over five consecutive weekends from May 13–June 10. During the Academy, candidates learned ocean dynamics, various types of ocean rescues, basic life support certification, rescue boat operations, public relations and specific Department policies and procedures.

Every day, candidates trained in physical fitness, rescue work and medical skills, and competed in a physical event.  Physical events were a combination of running, swimming and problem-solving. They were designed to be physically challenging and resemble rescues lifeguards may face on the beach in an emergency situation.

The Lifeguard Division is responsible for protecting beach-goers along 72 miles of coastline, including 31 miles of sandy beaches and Catalina Island. In 2016, more than 56 million people visited Los Angeles County beaches.
