On Wednesday, June 21, the Los Angeles County Fire Department hosted its 18th annual March of Dimes Barbecue at the Cecil R. Gehr Training Center. Guests enjoyed a classic car show, vendors, raffle prizes and a barbecue. Camps 2 and 9 pulled out all the stops in preparing the lunch, and Fire Chief Daryl Osby and his executive team took the opportunity to serve the meal to guests. Proceeds from this well-attended event add to the tally of the Department’s overall March of Dimes campaign that runs until June 30. This year’s fundraising goal is $27,000.

The March of Dimes Foundation is a nonprofit organization that works to improve the health of mothers and babies. It was founded by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938 as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis to fight polio. It has since taken up promoting general health for pregnant women and babies. The campaign also supports the fight against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), birth defects and other infant diseases and ailments associated with childbirth.

In his remarks, Chief Osby extended thanks on behalf of the Department to the following community sponsors who help to make this event possible:

• Sal Flores, The Irving Moskowitz Foundation
• Raul Martinez, King Taco
• Arun Malik, AMVAC Chemical
• Mary Gutierrez, Vice Chair, F&A Federal Credit Union
• Stephen Salazar, California Water Service
• Christopher Allender, Fireman’s Brew
• Jim Asher, Sterling Pacific Meats
• Mike Sana, Commerce Casino
