Over the last 14 years the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) has raised millions of dollars for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Los Angeles Chapter. The 15th annual MDS “Fill the Boot” campaign will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 28 – 30. Firefighters from various shifts along with International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 1014 participated in the fundraiser by filling their firefighter boots with donations from LA County drivers stopped at intersections.
More than 1,500 IAFF locals and 100,000 firefighters participated in the fundraiser in 2016. On Wednesday, June 28, LACoFD firefighters along with Local 1014 raised $35,000. This year’s goal is $300,000, according to IAFF local 1014.
The MDA is a nonprofit organization that aims to improve the health of people suffering from muscular dystrophy, diseases of the nervous system, and the muscular system. The organization was founded in 1950 by a group of parents who had children with muscular dystrophy. In support of the MDA, firefighters throughout the country campaign for the annual “Fill the Boot” campaign to raise awareness and funds for the organization. Last year, firefighters raised 24 million for the MDA.
