With a little help from Dr. Seuss, Los Angeles County Fire Captain Eugene Tachiyama, Engineer Kevin Halverson, Fire Fighter Rafael Ortiz and Fire Fighter Aleksander from Fire Station 162 in Hawthorne got students at York Elementary School fired up about reading during this year’s “Read Across America” event on Wednesday, March 4.
Students were excited to listen to the firefighters read beloved Dr. Seuss books as part of the program, which was launched by the National Education Association to focus on the importance of reading with children.
The fun didn’t stop with the Cat in the Hat. When the books were finished, students peppered the firefighters with questions about their jobs, said Community Service Liaison Laura Walters.
The firefighters said they had a great time reading to the students, and they can’t wait to participate in next year’s event!
