The Los Angeles County Fire Department will honor two fallen personnel on Saturday, May 21, during the annual Firefighters Memorial at headquarters in Los Angeles.
The names of Shawn M. Bayer and John J. Cobos were added to the Firefighters Memorial Wall this week.
The ceremony, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., will include remarks from Fire Chief Daryl L. Osby and the annual reading of the wall’s names, which date back to 1929.
The families of the fallen, members of the Department’s Family Support Group and all Department personnel are invited and encouraged to attend the ceremony, which will be followed by a barbecue lunch sponsored by Local 1014.
The memorial is a time to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Each year, people gather together to spend time in the company of others who know what it is like to have lost a loved one—be it a spouse, a parent, a child, a friend, a sibling or a fellow coworker.
The memorial wall was a project started in 1988 by the wives in the Family Support Group, who wanted something to honor their spouses. On May 6 of that year, they formed the nonprofit Los Angeles County Firefighters Memorial Committee, Inc.. About seven years and nearly $60,000 later, they broke ground on the memorial wall.
The wall serves as a reminder of those we have lost and the sacrifices made by personnel. It gives families a place to return to and lets everyone know that our firefighter brothers and sisters will never be forgotten.
