At its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors proclaimed the month of September as “Los Angeles County Heart and Stroke Walk Month”.
According to the California Department of Public Health, the risk of dying from coronary heart disease is equivalent to one death for every 991 Californians; while the death rate from stroke was 35 deaths per 100,000.
Los Angeles County supports goals to improve the health of all residents by encouraging physical activity and healthy living. The annual Heart and Stroke Walk is a non-competitive 5K walk that raises funds to support research and outreach to individuals at risk for cardiovascular disease and stroke. This year, there will be four Heart and Stroke Walks throughout the county.
More than 25,000 participants are expected to participate and demonstrate their commitment in fighting the county’s No. 1 and No. 2 killers — heart disease and stroke. The Board encourages all residents and employees to attend and support the mission of the American Heart Association and their efforts to raise awareness for heart disease and stroke.
