At its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved an agreement with the County of Los Angeles Firefighters’ Association (Firefighters’ Association); authorized the purchase of one new rescue boat; negotiated several leases for various County departments, including Fire; adopted an ordinance that adds a bonus provision for Battalion Chiefs; and issued three proclamations.
This week, the Board gave Fire Chief Daryl Osby the OK to enter into an agreement with the Firefighters’ Association, and to make all future amendments and modifications to the agreement as needed. The Firefighters’ Association will work collaboratively with the Fire Department to provide expertise and coordination to improve operational safety and efficiency for safety personnel through information technology. Incorporated in 1977 as a nonprofit public benefit corporation, the Firefighters’ Association promotes and encourages training and legislation beneficial to the fire service and the public. Information on the agreement can be found here.
Supervisors also approved the purchase of one new rescue boat for the Lifeguard Division in an amount not to exceed $651,000. Additionally, the Board approved an appropriation adjustment for the amount of $75,000. On March 21, 2017, the Board initially approved the acquisition of a rescue boat but the resulting bids received through the Internal Services Department were much lower than expected, prompting the discounted price and the appropriation adjustment.
And, the Board revised a recommendation to authorize the Chief Executive Officer to negotiate and complete 59 minor leases for various County departments, including Fire. The proposed leases to be renewed or amended cannot exceed a monthly rental rate of $7,500 nor exceed a three-year term. See specifics for more information on the affected leases.
The Board also adopted an ordinance that corrects a clerical error and adds a bonus provision for Battalion Chiefs. Effective July 1, 2016, all Battalion Chiefs (56 hours) who are assigned to a 40-hour position shall receive a bonus of 2.5283 percent. Employees qualifying for the bonus shall continue to receive the bonus as long as they are assigned to the 40-hour position.
Finally, the Board approved three proclamations for the month of June. Countywide, June has been recognized as “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) Pride Month”; June 12 has been proclaimed “Philippine Independence Day” to commemorate the 71st year of full independence for the Republic of the Philippines; and June 21 is “Make Music Day” which is a worldwide celebration of free outdoor music held on the summer solstice. Residents are encouraged to participate in the annual celebration. See specifics for a comprehensive list and schedule of performers.
