The city of Venice hosted its second annual Venice Pride Kickoff Celebration and unveiled the “Venice Pride Flag Lifeguard Tower” on Thursday, June 1, 2017. The tower is a public art installation located on Venice Beach at Brooks Avenue.
Attendees included Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, Los Angeles City Council member Mike Bonin, Los Angeles County Fire Department Lifeguard Division, Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, and Venice Pride Board President Grant Turck.
The event also included a “Bill Rosendahl Memorial Beach” dedication, named in honor of the first openly gay man to be elected to the Los Angeles City Council.
“At a time when so many rights secured and fought for by our LGBT communities are again in jeopardy, it is simply wonderful to see this eye-popping and dramatic artistic and political statement on Venice Beach. It was wonderful also to be there to dedicate this beach to a fearless city council member, gay leader and dear friend, my late colleague Bill Rosendahl,” said Supervisor Kuehl.
