Fire Chief Daryl L. Osby and Pasadena Fire Chief Bertral Washington are teaming up with the Fire Family Foundation this weekend to host a fundraiser in support of Dylan Wolfe, a 2 1/2-year-old battling brain cancer.

Dylan, whose mother Katie is a clerk in the Department’s Forestry Division, was diagnosed with cancer shortly after he turned 1, and at 13 months old, he received his first chemo treatment. Since then, he’s received 60 IV rounds of dual-dose chemo and 8 MRIs, spent Mother’s Day in the emergency room, and suffered countless fever scares. The tumors have left him legally blind.

“He’s a warrior,” said Wolfe. “He’s a superhero; he’s my soul mate; he’s my love bug. He’s my everything. He’s my peanut butter cup.”

Though the original tumor shrank by the end of his initial treatment, doctors discovered another tumor.

“My little guy, when I would have envisioned having ‘Mommy and Me’ classes and playdates, was having weekly chemo infusions and making friends with doctors and nurses,” Wolfe said.

Since Dylan’s diagnoses, Wolfe has spent countless hours at doctors’ appointments and hospitals, and has been unable to work much.

“He’s a busy little boy,” Wolfe said. “He never leaves the house, but he’s got an occupational therapist; he’s got a vision therapist that comes twice a week; he’s got physical therapy; he’s got speech therapy.”

The fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, March 14, at the Title Boxing Club, Old Pasadena. Chief Washington has challenged Chief Osby to find the strongest, fittest firefighters among their ranks, according to the flier promoting the fundraiser. Firefighters will face off at the boxing bag and participate in other strenuous activities.

Coincidentally, the date is also the birthday of Wolfe’s grandmother, who died last year. “She’ll be there with us,” Wolfe said. “I’m confident ‘Bubba’ will be surrounded by love so he can continue his fight.”

It costs $30 for participants—who may either take a 30-minute boxing class or participate in the challenge—and $10 for spectators, including lunch. Commemorative T-shirts will also be available for $12.

All donations are tax-deductible and can be made via firefamilyfoundation.org or mailing a check payable to the Fire Family Foundation to the following address:

Fire Family Foundation
815 Colorado Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90041
Include the notation “Dylan Wolfe” in the memo line.

The Fire Family Foundation will use the proceeds to help pay for Dylan’s treatments that are not covered by insurance. The Boxing Club, Old Pasadena is located at 87 Fraser Alley in Pasadena. Tickets are available for purchase at firefamilyfoundation.org/dylan.
