Fire Captain Cesar Cano, the recipient of the 2015 Perpetual Fire Prevention Award of Excellence, has been doing fire prevention since his first day as a firefighter.
“The captain calls us to line up, and he tells us, after we train or drill the rookie, we’re going to go out and do some fire prevention,” Cano recalled after being recognized by Mayor Michael Antonovich at the Oct. 6 meeting of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. “It’s part of what we do, and it’s a very important role that we play.”
A 28-year veteran of the fire service and a member of the Fire Prevention Division’s Public Safety and Film Unit, Cano received the award for his community outreach and stressing the importance of smoke detectors in homes.
Cano is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University, where he received a degree in accounting. Before joining the Fire Department, he worked for the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
He is the 23rd recipient of the award, which is given to a member of the Fire Prevention Division for his or her involvement in fire prevention and community activities within Los Angeles County.
